Got the new tires on it last night and took it around the block. It's leaking trans fluid pretty bad so I did not go far or fast. Even at the level it is at now I think it affected shifting. I've got a guy who is going to look at it for me next week. I'll probably change the gaskets and filter, refill it and then see how it works.
Also need to get the carb tuned and timing adjusted.
To pass inspection I'll also need to get the emergency brake fixed. I'm hoping it is just a cable adjustment.
I'll back it out into the drive one day next week so I can wash it and vacuum it then get some pictures.

Awesome! Let us know when you need an extra hand, there's several of us Mustang/Ford guys here, the Chevy guys might even throw in a hand once they finish pushing their cars home

I can use all the help I can get.
If anyone can help with the transmission leak or the steering system that would be great. Also need to adjust the electronic carb. I'm a novice but I listen well and learn quickly. I've read about all this but doing it alone can be a little intimidating.

I have rebuilt several steering systems in mustangs - both manual and powered. It can all be renewed in an afternoon. I usually take longer to clean and paint the parts while they are off the car - but the job is really simple. Send me a note if you want some help.

So I pushed it out of the garage and washed it with my kids a few weeks ago on a nice sunny Texas January day. Emma, my 5 year old did all the interior work and bagged all the loose screws and parts she found for me. When Abby, two and a half, got up form her nap she came out to help with the exterior. And mom had us all pose for a group picture when we were done. I told the girls they would get a ride in the car as a reward but when I tried to charge the battery to get it started and pull it back in the garage I couldn't get enough power to turn it over. So I put them in the car and pushed them into the garage. So this week I bought a new battery and new battery cables and after installation it fired right up. It made a lot of smoke burning off old gas but I topped it off with a couple gallons of 93. I drained the oil and I'll finish changing it as soon as I get a new washer for the drain plug and then a covert trip down to the car wash to get the grime off the bottom so I can diagnose the power steering and transmission leaks better.

Looks like you have some good little helpers. I think 69 Fastback is my favorite Mustang body style. I used to have one.

I need to stop working on the car because I keep finding more stuff that needs work. Latest headache is a leaking carb. Old kerosene fuel is coming out from under the carb and pooling in the intake manifold valleys. I know the carb that is on it is not original, I don't know anything else about it It's a Holley with 6R1919B stamped on it. Any advice or help with the carb would be welcome. Also saw I have a small weep coming from the water pump. I think I might take all the power steering and AC under the hood components off.

Got it out of the garage and drove the kids around the block.
Three things I noticed:
1) I seem to have a vacuum leak because it bogs down when accelerating from stop, I replaced the cracked caps I found but I may have to replace hoses.
2) It did not shift out of second gear. The transmission fluid was a little low so I filled it up but it didn't get much better. I'm going to have a transmission guy do a house call.
3) My fuel, temp and alt gauges aren't working. I read the first thing to check is corrosion at the ground site. I also have a few dash lights out, but the important ones work.
Then I went to the car wash to power-wash the caked on gunk off the bottom. Inadvertently got a little water under the ignition coil wire boot and had to wait for it to dry out before I could start it up again but I can actually see the parts under the car now.
I think I'm going to rebuild the old carburetor and reattach the choke heat tube on it. I figured out that if I leave the keys in the ignition over night the battery drains, I think the electric assist choke is the culprit.

Does anyone have a list of things on the Safety inspection? I want to get it registered and inspected so I can take it to a local meet up since I live about 2 miles from the 183 & 1431 cruise-in.
Things I know need work off the list are: 1. Parking brake 2. New wipers (easy) but I haven't tested the motors yet.

Thanks for the link. I think this is my work off list.
1. Horn - Works intermittently, I need to make it reliable 2. Windshield Wipers - replace blades, motor works fine 4. Steering- need to remove power steering components because they leak. 6. Brakes (system) (Parking - beginning with 1960 models) - need to fix parking brake 10. Exhaust Emission System (beginning with 1968 models) - is this just the PCV hookup from the valve cover to the intake? If so I think I'm fine. 17. Head Lamps (2) - I have one cracked light that need to be replaced.

Inspection Work off list status: 1. Diagnosed problem to horn contact corrosion in the steering wheel. Horns are loud when connected directly to 12V
2. Windshield wiper assemblies have been ordered
4. No progress on pwr steering- Does anyone want to come over and work on this?
6. Parking brake appears to work, just need a return spring on the handle - ordered
10. Have a cracked hose from the breather to the manifold. May not even be hooked up correctly - still investigating.
17. Head lamp ordered
I also found that my vacuum line to the transmission regulator was completely disconnected under the car. The hose in the engine bay is also brittle. I'm going to replace both of them and have the transmission serviced - hopefully this week.
If anyone wants to help the things I need/want to do near term are: - replace points & coil with pertronix ignitor (in the mail) - check compression - I don't have compression gauge - remove power steering components and grease steering box (needs special grease) I don't have a grease gun anymore

Register it as an antique and be done with it. No inspections and cheap registration.

I thought about it, but I want to drive it recreationally. With antique I couldn't drive it to Cooper's in Llano unless they were having a car show up there.
Part of this is the challenge of getting it done. This car has not been inspected since 2002 in Mississippi. Still has the sticker on it.

I know quite a few people that have antique registration and basically drive whenever they want to. They don't have any real issues.
I may do it next time, but I'm keeping my YOM plates. I don't care for the regular antique plates.

Transmission guy took about 90 minutes to drop the pan and the valve body, replace the o-rings and removed the hokey puck to firm the shifting. We reassembled everything and found the dipstick tube was not connected to anything.
Hopefully I can find a car with a C4 locally and see how theirs is connected. Does the Hoss have a C4?
I'll refill the transmission tomorrow and take it out for a drive. Nest task is to remove the power steering pump and hoses and rebuild.
If anyone needs a transmission guy I have a strong recommendation for Mark, Let me know and I'll give you his contact number. His shop is in P'ville near the 45/130 intersection.
I've also fixed my trunk latch to make it reliable and fixed my vacuum lines and PCV hose. I'm stripping and repainting the original air cleaner and valve covers too.

I don't care for the regular antique plates. It's not the cops you have to worry about, it's the Insurance company. If you drive an antique registered and insured car for pleasure - they might not be obligated to pay if it is damaged or stolen. Any car that you drive should be able to pass the very basic Texas requirements. Keep safe and get it in order - it's not worth the risk to your family and others.

Tried to adjust idle and set timing tonight after watching some youtube videos because I've never done it before.
The Idle was apparently set too high on purpose to hide other problems. I think I'm either going to have to replace the carb or rebuild it. I don't know how much confidence I have in the Holley 2300 that is on it now and it leaks I think it is the reason idle was set too high. Could be to compensate for the leak?
Timing was interesting, there are two yellow marks on the wheel and I set to one and it seemed to run ok, but there are no numbers so I have no idea what it is set to. I read that factory spec was 6B but most Mustang guys say to start at 10, Who knows where the mark is?
I was gliding along pretty happily until this setback and how crappy the car is running. Tonight was depressing. I was hoping to have it all set to drive to a cruise in this weekend. Back to reality.

I've ordered the carb rebuild kit for the Holley. I'll use that one for now. My research shows I have the original intake manifold with appropriate build date for my car and an original Autolite 2100 carb for a 302-2V with auto transmission in a box. The carburetor is in really bad shape and needs to be professionally rebuilt. Some of the throttle linkages are missing.
