Ok so short of a new Corvette or GM full size truck/suv, I really am not a fan of many NEW cars, especially 4-door sedans. BUT Dad, Eddie and I drove over to Hewlett Chevy the other night, and I got to see my first Chevy (Holden) SS. In pictures it didn’t look like much….kind of a Pontiac G8 with Malibu trimming. In person though, man I like it! The one here is a metallic slate grey, with polished wheels, a big sunroof, and big chrome exhaust. The hood appears to sit higher than it did on the G8, I like that….I enjoy looking over a hood, not just a dashboard. The side windows are tall, you can SEE out of the car, they’re not all squashed and bunker-like (think Camaro/Charger/300). The car is not as rounded as it looks in pics. In person it had lots of sharp edges and creases in the styling, and I like the chrome trim here and there. The seats and interior in general look FANTASTIC. And knowing it has a 420hp V8 and rear drive….well…that’s flat awesome.
Dislikes? No manual trans option. If they offered a 6spd, I’d really be drooling. And with the various Camaros in the lot with sticks, not to mention the late GTO and G8, it’s not like GM does not have a trans that will fit!!
Also, the gigantic GOLD Chevy bowtie emblems on the grill and trunk lid are a bit much. They should be smaller, and also possibly color-matched to the car, or just black, or even red-outlined….Chevy did styles like this on a lot of cars in the past, but now seems to want giant gold emblems on every car they make….it looks silly on the Camaro too….thankfully they resisted putting a huge bowtie on the new Corvette…although I’m sure there is a design somewhere with one.
Lastly, the name. Chevy “SS”. SS…what? My Dad kept calling it an Impala SS. I had to keep telling him the Impala is a 4cyl or V6 FWD car….this is just an “SS”. They should have gone retro, like Chrysler did with the Charger name. A few people would gripe, since it’s a 4dr sedan, but I think this should have been called the Chevelle SS. That’s still a cool name, and this would have been a great car to bring it back with. Even just spelling it out, calling it the Super Sport, would be cool…but still, if you tell someone you own an SS, they will always ask what kind….Camaro, Chevelle, Nova……Cobalt…hahaha. Just calling this is SS is silly.
SO that’s my review. I sure hope they make a 6-spd manual option soon!
