Laird, the Pacer Wagon guy, ended up with my clean '86 Caprice sedan a little over a year ago. Hated to let that one go, it was such a nice solid car. Well Laird has taken really good care of it, happily, and I still get to visit it. Friday he did something I always wanted to do to it. He dual'd it out over at Taylor Muffler. Not the best picture, he sent it from his cell phone, but you get the idea! 2 1/4 pipes, right out the back, angle cut chrome tips, DynoMax Turbo mufflers. $300 even! It's funny, Laird ended up with that low-mile white '96 Bonneville I scored off CraigsList, with the idea that it would be a nice daily driver. The Bonny looks brand new....and sits in his driveway. He drove it about two weeks and then went back to the Caprice. I kidded him about it...he said he uses the Bonny for business when he wants to look "respectable" but likes driving the Caprice better. Can't beat a good old B-body! -Mike

Just a little 305 Chevy small block V8. All stock. Nothing hot but now it at least has a nice burble. That car has the up-level interior and is a GREAT trip car. I took it down to Corpus two summers ago, cruise on and a/c blowing and it got 25mpg on the highway. Shocking.
Paints getting thin on it now, but it's still a nice clean old car. Glad Laird saved it from becoming a lowrider or having 30-inch wheels on it.

See if that thing can get 25 mpg on the highway, why can't the newer stuff do any better?

The 3800 in my old 96 Bonneville got 30mpg on the highway. The LT1 in my Roadmaster, which is a HUGE car, gets 22-24 on I-35 going to Dallas. That said the POS 307 in my Cutlass has never gotten over 18mpg since I bought the car. You just never know!

Why can't they put a 30mpg engine in a Suburban? Your 96 Bonneville has got to be right around the same size. And that caprice is long too. I'm stuck with 15 mpg Highway and like .0025 mpg in town!

My wife's '03 Susbuban (5.3 V8) gets 16, in town or out. I was SHOCKED at the mileage my Roadmaster wagon got compared to the Burb. I guess it's because the Burb is a lot taller and weighes even more.

I don't know, the Ford Mod motors do pretty good, depending on the vehicle, but yeah the newer GM motors usually are better for economy.
