Have a safe trip. I hope the wiper blades and tires are good.
Give me a call when you get back. I'd like to come by and check it out.

I just got back from my adventure. 19 hours straight driving and I'm ready to go to bed. The car runs great and I had no problems (with the car anyways). The seller had to leave town unexpectedly, so he had a friend deliver it to the airport. The friend had nobody else to help him, so he towed the Firebird, picked me up (3 hours late), then dropped it just outside the airport. My problems were - I messed up on directions and went 20 miles out of my way, then at 2:00 this morning, while going thru a construction zone narrowed to one lane, I got confused and found myself doing some four wheeling. I hit that dirt pretty fast and it scared the hell out of me, but I was able to make it back on pavement (Thank God). Mileage was amazing, worst was 24mpg and best was 27.5 (305TBI, 5-speed, 3.08 gears). The car had 69,815 miles when I picked it up and now has just over 71K. The car in a nutshell - drivetrain great, interior great, 99% everything works, body sucks. The seller flat out lied about the body, and it ain't what I thought it would be. The wife won't let me spend a dime on it, so be looking for a future sanding party announcement.

Go get that white V6 Firebird from Wrench-A-Part in South Austin. Body is near perfect and not a spec of rust. Take two, make one!
Glad to hear you made it ok, but really sorry the body is shot. When you said Chicago all I read was SALT.
Good luck!

OK, here are some pics of my new ride. Not real pretty, but oh well, it's a start. 1989 Firebird Formula 305 TBI stock original 5-speed w/ 3.08's (?) in drum rear PW, PDL, PM, rear hatch release (all work) T-tops, cruise, A/C, Sony Xplode stereo /CD A/C and cruise don't work, stereo & speakers are new Tires a fairly new, recent brake work, cooling system good The body sucks, it ran up the rear of 18 wheeler, seller replaced bumper, hood, left fender, and did terrible job of lining things up. both doors rusted bad but comes w/ 2 good doors (need to install). In a nutshell - Runs great, 27.5 mpg highway, interior real nice, very low mileage (71K miles), but has a lot of rust.

Miles are great, but DANG the body needs help.
I say again, go get the white Firebird V6 at Wrench-A-Part and we'll swap all the mechanicals over. I'll gladly help!
You need a rust-free Texas body to hang that low-mile drivetrain on!
The dash pad looks good, as does the rest of the interior, and I LOVE that it's a stick.
Remember, salt is margaritas and french fries, not roads!!

Here's your body Albani, up near Waco. Lets hook up the tow dolley and go snag it, and you can swap all the low-mile parts over. It's even an '89 Formula. If the body is solid you'd be WAY ahead of the game! waco.craigslist.org/pts/2333443183.htmlThat's pretty much made-to-order right there. No engine in it.

Just curious... what did you give for that guy?

The guy was asking $1900 and I talked him down to $1650. $140 to fly to Chicago, and $135 in gas to drive back. I bought it sight unseen and the guy outright lied about the amount of rust. No worries, I can't lose money on it. Probably just band aid fix a bit and cheap paint and I'll hang on to it for a while.

Right colors and right options. You'll make it nice. Knowing you it'll be replaced in 2-3 weeks with the next project. ; )

Thats too bad about the rust issues. I'm not sure what the best approach would be about that. How is the under carriage?
It is cool about the gas mileage though.
